Joining competitions has been one of the most meaningful experiences in
my academic journey, as it allowed me to challenge myself beyond the classroom
and develop both personal and academic skills. Among the competitions I
participated in were a poetry writing competition and the Erlangga English
Speech Competition. Although they were different in form, both experiences
played an important role in shaping my confidence and self-expression.
The poetry writing competition gave me a space to express thoughts and
emotions through words. Writing poetry required me to be more reflective and
sensitive to language, as every line had to carry meaning and feeling. During
the process, I learned how to organize ideas creatively while still maintaining
clarity and depth. This competition also taught me patience, as revising poems
repeatedly was necessary to achieve the best result. More importantly, it
allowed me to understand myself better through writing, turning personal
experiences into meaningful literary works. Though I did not win, I’ve gotten my
chance to collaborate in a poetry book, as shown here:
Meanwhile, participating in the Erlangga English Speech Competition
challenged me in a different way. Speaking in front of an audience in a foreign
language required strong preparation, confidence, and mental readiness. I had
to practice pronunciation, intonation, and body language to ensure that my
message could be delivered clearly and effectively. Although I felt nervous at
first, standing on the stage helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and
improved my ability to communicate ideas in English. You can see the video

Overall, joining these competitions was not only about winning or
losing, but about growth and learning. Both experiences taught me discipline,
self-confidence, and the courage to step outside my comfort zone. They also
motivated me to continue developing my writing and speaking skills, which will
be valuable for my academic and professional future.
